In my last post, I introduced the world of anime. Now in this post and the next one, I will recommend my top 20 anime.
All of them are of mixed genres, I am going to give you the summary and my reviews on it and a trailer to the anime.
(Note: Manga is a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels)
Enjoy~~
20) Dr. Stone
One fateful day, all of humanity was petrified by a blinding flash of light. After several millennia, highschooler Taiju awakens and finds himself lost in a world of statues. However, he’s not alone! His science-loving friend Senku’s been up and running for a few months and he's got a grand plan in mind—to kick start civilization with the power of science!
Review: Have you ever thought of what would happen if suddenly there was a massive disaster which caused everything to go back to its Stone Age era? Just imagine a world with no vehicles, no smartphones, no clothes, no metal, no electricity!! But what if there was a person who with his intellect and memory could invent mechanical gears and a cellphone for mass distance communication when the whole world was in the STONE AGE ERA?? I have watched this anime and have read the manga too. And this is definitely one of the most interesting anime to watch this year.
19) Ouran High School Host Club
Haruhi Fujioka is a bright scholarship candidate with no rank or title to speak of—a rare species at Ouran High School, an elite academy for students of high pedigree. When she opens the door to Music Room #3 hoping to find a quiet place to study, Haruhi unexpectedly stumbles upon the Host Club. Led by the princely Tamaki, the club—whose other members include the "Shadow King" Kyouya, the mischievous Hitachiin twins, and the childlike Haninozuka "Honey" and his strong protector Mori—is where handsome boys with too much time on their hands entertain the girls in the academy.
Review: Hmm...a tomboy suddenly in debt because of a broken 8 million yen vase, thus made to join a high school "host" club to pay it off. It is a classic anime, it is hilarious and full of cliched humor. It has a colorful cast, each character distinguishable, and have their own sob stories which are quickly washed away by their over exaggerated antics. The female lead is the most apathetic amidst their theatrics and this is one of the reasons you should watch it.
18) Assassination Classroom
A humorous and action-packed story about a class of misfits who are trying to kill their new teacher – an alien octopus with bizarre powers and super strength! The teacher has just destroyed the moon and is threatening to destroy the earth – unless his students can destroy him first. What makes things more complicated is that he's the best teacher they've ever had!
Review: The yellow tentacled monster destroyed the moon and is then teaching a classroom full of high school students to kill him. Whoever kills him wins ten billion yen. So what is the issue? Nothing much just that "Koro Sensei" is a massive troll, an effective motivator, a being with out of this world powers. But the most surprising thing that he is, is a compassionate and excellent teacher.
He can create lessons tailor made for each student, help the students hone their second knife, first being their assassination attempts on him, their career paths, their future.
The students of class 3 - E are the outcasts of the entire school. They are the delinquents, the dumbest of all and the teachers, students, parents all of them accept it as a part of their lives. The students are made to be the bottom of the barrel and have no future. And these students are given the chance of making 10 billion yen. It's a funny, happy go lucky, emotional roller coaster anime. You can't hate it.
17) My Hero Academia
The appearance of "quirks," newly discovered super powers, has been steadily increasing over the years, with 80 percent of humanity possessing various abilities from manipulation of elements to shape shifting. This leaves the remainder of the world completely powerless, and Izuku Midoriya is one such individual.
Since he was a child, the ambitious middleschooler has wanted nothing more than to be a hero. Izuku's unfair fate leaves him admiring heroes and taking notes on them whenever he can. But it seems that his persistence has borne some fruit: Izuku meets the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might's quirk is a unique ability that can be inherited, and he has chosen Izuku to be his successor!
Review: Sky High anyone? Yes absolutely similar to the movie, it is based in a superhero world where people have all kinds of "quirks" as their powers. Children who want to make a career as a superhero go to the prestigious school to learn. But it is the world of the fittest. Weak are rejected and only the strongest survive.
This is a story of Deku, a boy with no quirk. All his life, Deku has only ever wanted one thing, and he’s been told over and over that it’s impossible. But when his life long idol All Might says to him,“ Top heroes have stories about them from their school days, Most of the stories have one thing in common: their bodies moved before they had a chance to think. That was true for you too, wasn’t it? You can become a hero."
16) Yuri!!! on Ice
Reeling from his crushing defeat at the Grand Prix Finale, Yuuri Katsuki, once Japan's most promising figure skater, returns to his family home to assess his options for the future. At age 23, Yuuri's window for success in skating is closing rapidly, and his love of pork cutlets and aptitude for gaining weight are not helping either.
However, Yuuri finds himself in the spotlight when a video of him performing a routine previously executed by five-time world champion, Victor Nikiforov, suddenly goes viral. In fact, Victor himself abruptly appears at Yuuri's house and offers to be his mentor. As one of his biggest fans, Yuuri eagerly accepts, kicking off his journey to make it back onto the world stage. But the competition is fierce, as the rising star from Russia, Yuri Plisetsky, is relentlessly determined to defeat Yuuri and win back Victor's tutelage.
Review: This anime has so many layers stacked on. It has a character who struggling with his defeat at Grand Prix. Dealing with LGBT undertones, this is a story of an underdog who thrives on the ice. This made me appreciate the sport of ice skating, the things the athletes go through in real life. The competitiveness, the rigorous training, the emotions and the slapstick humor all make a great entertaining show.
15) Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
Chiyo Sakura is a cheerful high school girl who has fallen head over heels for the oblivious Umetarou Nozaki. Much to Chiyo's confusion, when she confesses to her beloved Nozaki, he hands her an unfamiliar autograph. As it turns out, the stoic teenage boy is actually a respected shoujo mangaka, publishing under the pen name Sakiko Yumeno! A series of misunderstandings leads to Chiyo becoming one of Nozaki's manga assistants.
Throughout the hilarious events that ensue, she befriends many of her quirky schoolmates, including her seemingly shameless fellow assistant, Mikoto Mikoshiba, and the "Prince of the School," Yuu Kashima. Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun follows Chiyo as she strives to help Nozaki with his manga and hopes that he will eventually notice her feelings.
Review: It is a mixture of incredible comedy and romance. From the get go you get your bellies hurt from laughing out loud and every scene is carefully coupled with its emotional and cute moments. None of the jokes felt stale or overused and the scenarios that develop are varied enough to make you wanting more and more. On top of that, the reactions from the cast will always bring a smile to your face. And most of all, NONE of the characters are unlikable, you just can't hate or dislike any of them even if you wanted too!
14) Charlotte
While on the surface Yuu Otosaka appears to be just another charming and intelligent teenager, he has a secret—he has the ability to slip into people's minds and fully control their body for five seconds at a time. Yuu has been using this skill for years to gain the highest grades, which allowed him to enter a prestigious high school.
When the enigmatic Nao Tomori catches Yuu using his power, she coerces him and his sister Ayumi into transferring to Hoshinoumi Academy, a school for students with supernatural abilities. The student council of the school, led by Nao, is tasked with secretly tracking down adolescents who abuse their powers. Yuu is forced to join the student council and together, they face formidable challenges that bring him closer to the shocking truth that his own, seemingly incomplete ability, might be more powerful than he could have ever imagined.
Review: This anime is a tear jerker. Charlotte does not only break our hearts, it breaks the narrative because of its pacing. The protagonist at the start is annoying, but we later see his character develop into this anti-hero saviour who almost steeps into being an overlord but is restrained by few who care. His character has the potential to end the world but the last episodes of this anime pulled my heart into million pieces. This anime a definite must see.
13) Barakamon (definitely watch the prequel Handa-kun)
Seishuu Handa is an up-and-coming calligrapher: young, handsome, talented, and unfortunately, a narcissist to boot. When a veteran labels his award-winning piece as "unoriginal," Seishuu quickly loses his cool with severe repercussions.
As punishment, and also in order to aid him in self-reflection, Seishuu's father exiles him to the Goto Islands, far from the comfortable Tokyo lifestyle the temperamental artist is used to. Now thrown into a rural setting, Seishuu must attempt to find new inspiration and develop his own unique art style—that is, if boisterous children (headed by the frisky Naru Kotoishi), fujoshi middle schoolers, and energetic old men stop barging into his house! The newest addition to the intimate and quirky Goto community only wants to get some work done, but the islands are far from the peaceful countryside he signed up for. Thanks to his wacky neighbors who are entirely incapable of minding their own business, the arrogant calligrapher learns so much more than he ever hoped to.
Review: Definitely watch it now! Barakamon is that anime you watch when you want something that is warm and fuzzy and will make you smile and laugh all the time. It is a story about a man finding love in his work for himself. The only downside is it has only twelve episodes, but do not worry, there is a prequel! Handa-kun is the story about the same man in his teens and all the misconceptions surrounding him and his friends.
Under the impression that the deference and attention he receives from the other students is actually bullying. Hilarity ensues as one character after another challenges his position as the school idol, and somehow comes away as a fan all while Handa is horrified and clueless.
12) Skip Beat
Bright, diligent, and yet naïve 16-year-old Kyouko Mogami works hard to support the career and dreams of her childhood friend, crush, and rising pop icon, Shoutarou Fuwa. Toiling endlessly at burger joints and tea ceremonies, the innocent Kyouko remains unaware that day in day out, all her tireless efforts have been taken for granted, until, one day, she finds out that her beloved Shou sees her as nothing but a free servant. Shocked, heartbroken and enraged, she vows to take revenge on the rookie star by entering the ruthless world of entertainment herself. As she steps into this new life, Kyouko will face new challenges as well as people who will push her out of her comfort zone.
Review: Kyoko is shown as the lovesick girl willing to drop out of school for her crush and her seemingly unrequited love, Sho, who uses her and her love for him to work as his maid unknowingly. We see her develop from the point her heart is broken and seemingly locked in a Pandora's box to vow revenge against him. We see her struggle throughout the anime, the hardships she had during her childhood, her obstacles as she sets a goal in acting and executes them step by step. It is a comedy, with the centre being the rough diamond as she grows into a well accomplished actress. (I suggest you read the manga too! The anime is too short).
11) Detective Conan
Kudo Shinichi is a seventeen year-old high school detective whom people call the "Modern Sherlock Holmes." However, one night after a date with his childhood sweetheart, Ran, Shinichi witnessed an illegal trade and, caught off his guard, was knocked unconscious and fed a drug that was supposed to kill him... but he woke up and found himself shrunken to a seven year-old. In order to track down the men who did this to him, Shinichi hid his identity and lived with Ran, whose father happened to be a hopeless detective, and with that came a series of murders and mysteries that he must solve.
Review: Detective Conan is that anime whose main plot doesn't move forward but has too many subplots. During the daily arcs which basically consist of murders and the murders being solved by Conan in a day or two. The main arc of the Men in Black has just started moving forward..after 900 or so episodes. But the I would recommend this anime since it has that mystery flair to it. Each murder in this series is different. It has so many closed room murders, murders on train, serial killers, the detective maniacs would have a blast!
